Several colleagues from the TOSCA-MP consortium will be speakers at the FIAT/IFTA World Conference in Dubai next week.
Mike Matton from VRT and Peter Schallauer from JRS will talk about “The MPEG-7 Audiovisual Description Profile standard for describing results of automatic annotation techniques”, presenting joint work of different TOSCA-MP partners on the MPEG-7 AVDP and related applications. Jean-Pierre Evain from EBU will present a talk titled “Tools and standards are essential metadata enablers”. Giorgio Dimino from RAI, co-chair of FIMS will talk about “Out-of-the-box interoperable components for the design of digital media archives”.
TOSCA-MP contributes to MPEG work on Multimedia Preservation Archival Format
The press release of the 102nd MPEG meeting discusses the work on multimedia preservation:
„ Understanding the importance for the preservation of digital multimedia used in many different domains including cultural heritage, scientific research, engineering, education and training, entertainment, and fine arts, MPEG has started to work on the standardization of the Multimedia Preservation Archival Format. At this meeting, MPEG reviewed the responses to the call for proposals. Responses showed that MPEG has wide range of technologies to be used for multimedia preservation such as Professional Archival Application Format, MPEG-21 Digital Item Description Language and various MPEG-7 audio-visual descriptors. MPEG will continue to evaluate the submissions and develop standards in its coming meetings including a working draft in April 2013 that will achieve the status of Final Draft International Standard in April 2014.
TOSCA-MP is contributing to this standardisation effort with the MPEG-7 Audiovisual Description Profile (AVDP) and a proposal for visual quality description using MPEG-7.
TOSCA-MP @ FIAT/IFTA 2012 World Conference
TOSCA-MP will contribute to a workshop titled “Metadata and semantic searching” at the 2012 World Conference of FIAT/IFTA, the International Federation of Television Archives. The event takes place at the British Library in London, and the workshop is scheduled for Sept. 30 afternoon. For details, see the conference programme.
At the workshop, Peter Schallauer from JOANNEUM RESEARCH and Mike Matton from VRT will present an overview of the work of TOSCA-MP, discuss a case study of metadata extraction from VRT archives and talk about the links to the EBU MIM/SCAIE group’s activities.
MPEG-7 Audiovisual Description Profile is ISO standard
The Audiovisual Description Profile (AVDP) is a profile of the MPEG-7 multimedia description standard, targeting applications in audiovisual media production and archiving. AVDP has been developed by the EBU MIM/SCAIE group. The core group of contributors to the profile consists of members of the TOSCA-MP consortium, together with Japan’s national broadcaster NHK.
The profile supports the description of audio, video or audiovisual content, ensuring a unified document structure for all types of content. A key feature of AVDP is the modularity in the descriptions (e.g., separating metadata originating from different modalities or produced by different tools). It is the first profile based on version 2 of MPEG-7 and includes low-level audio and video descriptors. JOANNEUM RESEARCH provides a semantic validation service for this profile.
